Weeknote #36
🏠Human Activities
This has been a pretty busy week. The ceiling is all done. We have the shelves for IKEA to put up, but we are going to paint them first. so they’re just sitting in the garage. The kiddos starting soccer practice this week I have to work a bunch, though thankfully not on the weekend, but I have to guard a few times because we don’t have enough lifeguards. We as a family ran the Apple Festival 5K. Then we went to the Apple Festival and ate our way up and down it on a little disappointed that I didn’t get any ice cream then, but that’s OK. I can always get some later we then spent $400 on paint and supplies at Home Depot so we could paint the living room. I started on Saturday by painting the ceiling and getting that all set, and then today I painted the walls it looks really good in here. It’s nice to have the room back. The colors we chose were pretty close to what we had before, but a little bit different, a little fresher, and now we have the paint chips, so we can get more of them as we need. Their color is going to be the color for the rest of the house, while the accent walls in the living room will just be for that. It looks so much better than it did.
🛟 Gainful Employment
Work has been good. It’s been busy. Swim lesson started this week and so did swim team. so there was a need for a lot of guards and a lot of instructors, even though everybody’s gone back to high school or college and I don’t have enough guards, so I ended up working a few shifts to lifeguard, which is fine. I still like doing that and I can do it. It just obviously cuts into the time I have to do administrative work, which is unfortunate. We’re also in open enrollment right now and that’s gonna go by pretty quick. We only have two weeks for it, so we need to remember to move everybody onto my insurance. Lovely. nice to have that consolidated into one thing rather than two things like we did before yeah, wants to still learn every day there’s something new to learn at the job, which is good, but I’m waiting for it to feel like I’ve got a better handle on things, which is coming slowly but surely.
🔄 In Rotation
I’ve really been enjoying the show Slow Horses on Apple TV. I’ve been blowing through the seasons, which are nice and short, only six episodes each, in anticipation of the new season coming out on September 16.
I also really been enjoying the latest season of Silo on Apple TV. It’s been nice to see where the Silos came from, how they came about. and some of the history in that. Makes me really want to read the books. I’ve read the first book, but not the other ones, so I’ll need to go back and read those.
There’s a new Interpol album out, This Mirror Weighs a Ton, which I’ve been enjoying this week. I’ve had it on repeat in the background while I’ve been painting the living room.
There’s a bunch of audiobooks by Nghi Vo, the first one is called The Empress of Salt and Fortune. They’re all pretty short, they feel like old Asian fairy tales. but from the view of a cleric who goes around and collect stories from people. All of the books are about 2 to 3 hours long, so you can listen to them quickly and I’ve been going through them all. I think there are about eight of them.
There’s also a small series of books by Malka Older. The series is called The Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti. These books are also kind of short and about solving mysteries on a different planet or moon or space station, that part really doesn’t matter. It’s definitely not Earth, but they’re good quick reads. I’ve been enjoying those too.
🧠Brain Stuff
My birthday is coming up. It’s the big one, the big 50. I’m not sure how I feel about it, kind of excited, kind of nervous. Maybe nervous isn’t the right thing, but I feel like it’s a turning point where I’m no longer young. Maybe I need to start thinking about the future more. I don’t know. It’s just an odd thing to think about. Turning 50. It definitely feels like a milestone, kind of like an accomplishment. Whether or not that’s a good or bad accomplishment, I don’t know. I’m also not sure how I want to celebrate this birthday, which is not new, but we’ll see something will happen. Maybe we’ll go rafting or get a beer with friends or get some ice cream and eat some pie. There’s plenty of time to worry about all the other stuff later, or reminisce about everything that could’ve been.

Have you played the map game MapTag? That’s pretty good. You just try and tap on a globe where you think the city and country it pops up is. I am not very good at a lot of geography. I’m not horrible, but I could be a lot better. https://maptap.gg
