Weeknote #29
Well, this has been an interesting week! I finalized the move to my new position and also finished my old position. Now everybody at work knows I won’t be there anymore. It’s also our last week of Summer Vacation! Back to the real world next week…
It was an odd way to end a position. I messaged everybody in our team app, Sling, that I was leaving and people said nice things or added an emoji to the post, but on my final day I was just done. No fanfare, no real bigger goodbyes, I just finished my job and left. It was a bit of a sad way to end and made me realize that I’ve not had that kind of ending at a job in a long time. I think when I was done at my first job, working at a grocery store, that I just left. And perhaps that’s what it is. For my first job I was a teenager, and most of the people I work with are teenagers as well. But for me, who has been in office settings for the past 30 years, it was a bit of a dissapointment. I’ll have to take that into my next position where I will be the one who can set that tone. My hope is that I will see some of my old coworkers next week before I start my new job and can actually say goodbye in person.
I got myself some nice new Field Notes for my new job. Since I’m working at a pool I wanted to get myself something related, so I purchesed the Is A River Alive? set for the new job. I think I might also get a larger water bottle as well. I’ve been using a 16oz one, but I might double that so I do’t have to refill quite so often. Though I’m still up in the air about that.
The weather this week was oppressive. It was either very hot, or very rainy, which made doing things outside difficult. I did get to mow the backyard, which was needed. I don’t think I had done it in a perhaps two months? It took me two days because the lawnmower batteries all died died on the first day because the grass was so long and a bit wet that it had to do a ton of work. So I finished it on the second day. It looks so much better and more inviting back there. I need to remember that, as nice as it is to leave the backyard for a bit, it is more welcoming when it’s shorter.
We got some really nice, and big, yellow squash from our little raised-bed garden. We roasted them and had them throughout the week. Very tasty! Nothing ever happened with the brussels sprouts we planted, but that’s okay, it was a test.
On Wednesday I took the van into the shop for some service. That was painful, as it usually is. It took almost 4 hours and cost about $1100! I don’t like taking care of a vehicle, there is so much I don’t know about it and always wonder if I really need to fix that thing, or what ever they tell me is something that I actually need to fix. I wish I knew more about fixing vehicles so I could diagnose things a little better other than just saying “This light came on, what do I do?!”.
We went to an improv show last night that some friends were in. It was interesting and very cool. They played five songs from the 90’s and redid the words to play out a big scene based on an audience member’s formative experience. It was a great night out. Before the show we got a tasty sicilian pizza from Birdie’s Pizza and ice cream from the French Broad Chocolate Company. We also saw a little of the Shindig on the Green, and somebody doing some great bubbles. Overall it was a great evening!
